U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan is furious and disappointed at the verdict of an American citizen Semi Whelan. His words quoted “Interfax”.
In his opinion, the prosecution did not provide evidence to prove the guilt of the convict. Sullivan promised that he would continue to seek the release Whelan.
Earlier the Moscow city court sentenced a US citizen to 16 years in a strict regime colony, recognizing guilty of espionage. The criminal case was considered closed, since the case materials contain information constituting a state secret.
Paul Whelan was detained in Moscow on 28 December 2018. On removal from the USB flash drive was discovered information that constitutes a state secret. Lawyer Whelan claimed that the drive had personal information about his stay in Russia during previous visits, but the sources of the newspaper “Kommersant” said that she, presumably, found a list of the personnel of one of divisions of FSB. Whelan was charged with spying for the United States.
