Employees of Norilsk Nickel sued over river pollution in Norilsk

The investigative Committee of Russia (TFR) opened a new criminal case against the employees of the company “Norilsk Nickel” after the discharge of sewage into the river close to Norilsk in the period from 2017 to 2019. About it reports a press-service of Department of the TFR in the Krasnoyarsk territory.

The basis for the investigation under article 246 of the criminal code (“violation of the rules of environmental protection”) of steel materials of public Prosecutor’s check. Proceedings were instituted against unidentified persons from the staff of “Norilsk Nickel” and “Mechanosensing”.

According to the preliminary version of the investigation, from June 2017 to July 2019 employees of these companies made some violations in the design and construction of a facility intended for waste Talnakh concentrator. The result of untreated waste water was discharged into the river Tomodachi, as well as in the soil in the area of the mine “October”.

Rosprirodnadzor has estimated that the recovery of the environment will require more than 154 million rubles.

Employees “Norilsk Nickel” become involved in the criminal case initiated after the fuel spill at CHP-3 in Norilsk. The investigation believes that the responsibility for the disrepair and destruction of the tank with diesel fuel should be met by the Director of CHPP-3 Pavel Smirnov, chief engineer Alexei Stepanov and his Deputy Yuri Kuznetsov. They are arrested.

As a result of the accident, which occurred on 29 may 2020 17 thousand tons of diesel fuel had penetrated into the soil and contaminating the river Barn, lakes and rivers Pacino flowing into the Kara sea.
