Scientists at the University of Maryland in the United States identified a mixture of antibodies, which may be a new effective means of antiviral therapy against coronaviruses SARS-CoV-2. About the discovery reported in the article published in the journal Science.
The researchers found which the antibodies bind to S-protein on the surface of the coronavirus. It is known that this protein plays a key role in the penetration of the virus into the cell, allowing the pathogen to bind to a receptor ACE2 belonging to the cell itself. There were evaluated several thousand human antibodies isolated from plasma recovered from COVID-19 people. Some antibodies were obtained from genetically modified mice, the organism which synthesized human antibodies upon infection with coronavirus.
Scientists have identified four of the most powerful in neutralizing coronavirus antibodies, two of which are used to create the most effective mixture. This cocktail is currently being tested in a clinical trial involving human subjects as a treatment for patients with COVID-19, and to prevent disease in those who are at high risk of infection.
