Scientists discovered in the Crimea, large reserves of underground fresh water, thanks to which in the future it will be possible to provide water to the settlements, the press service of the Sevastopol state University (Sevgi).
The source was found in the mountains in the study of underground high-temperature hearths, where the formation pressure of underground fresh water. Using innovative nuclear magnetic resonance “of geotomograf” scientists found that at a depth of 900-1100 meters by tectonic faults flows of fresh water with a temperature of 80-85 degrees. At a depth of 350-500 meters, there are water flows running along the faults across the Peninsula.
Head of the research laboratory Sevgi, candidate of technical Sciences Nikolai Kovalev said that these natural flows are unique because they are formed due to intensive evaporation of sea water. The formation of fresh water is continuous and does not depend on the time of year and precipitation.
“Given that in the Crimea the network of cross-cutting tectonic faults, it is possible to select underground fresh water near the settlements, in need of water supply”, — said Kovalev.
The University said that the main problem of extraction of such waters is the high cost of drilling wells. On the other hand, in the Crimea there are areas where fresh waters flow not in such deep layers (300 meters and less). This allows you to drill shallow wells with high performance.
In 2014, the Peninsula is in the water blockade by Ukraine, which previously covers up to 85 percent of needs of the Crimea in fresh water. Now people are provided with water through underground springs and reservoirs, natural filling, which last year was not enough water because of low rainfall.
