According to a member of the Committee on labour and social policy Andrei Isayev, if the majority of Russians want to declare the last day of the year weekends, the decision can be taken by the government in agreement with the Russian tripartite Commission.
Earlier, the leader of LDPR Vladimir Zhirinovsky has proposed to do in Russia four mandatory weekend from December 31 to January 3 inclusive. The rest of the days that now have the new year holidays, Zhirinovsky proposed to add to annual paid holiday.
Prior to that, Senator Andrey Kutepov was called to reduce the new year holidays in 2021 for up to three days (1-3 January) to offset the economic effect of the mode non-working days due to the pandemic coronavirus.

Every year due to the slowdown of industry in the new year, GDP may lose about 1.5%. Each additional day of “downtime” costs the economy another 250 billion rubles. So, in 2019 for the new year holidays, the country’s economy has lost 1.32 trillion rubles, or 1.25 percent of projected GDP. In 2018, the loss amounted to 1.2 trillion (1.2 percent of GDP).
