The candidate for the post of President of Belarus Valeri Tsepkalo stated that the country must choose between Russia and the West. He told this in an interview with RIA Novosti.
On the question of whether in front of Belarus geopolitical choice between Russia and the West, the rival of Alexander Lukashenko answered in the negative. “In today’s world should not be relations of the type “either-or”, that is friends with someone against someone. This is wrong, the world globaliseerumise, countries are interdependent, the relationship must be built on the principle “and-and”,” said Tsepkalo.
He added that the Union state Treaty “does not work”, but he doesn’t want to give up. It would be correct to revise some of the provisions, said Tsepkalo.
According to the politician, Russia needs to occupy a Central place in the foreign policy of Belarus, but Minsk is necessary to restore relations with Europe and the United States. Policy of Belarus should be economical, but “focusing” on relations with Russia and the EU because of geography, Economics and history.
“Belarusians equally long lived in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and then in the Russian Empire,” said Tsepkalo.
Presidential elections in Belarus scheduled for 9 August. The CEC verifies signatures collected willing potential candidates. Two participants of the presidential race — blogger Sergei tikhanovski and former head of Belgazprombank Viktor Babariko arrested. Lukashenko said that the authorities managed to disrupt the Belarus independence.
