Agreement “Gazprom” with the decision of the Stockholm arbitration court to pay the Poland half a billion dollars may be a “cunning plan” of Moscow. To such conclusion came the Polish newspaper Do Rzeczy.
According to the journalist, the behaviour of the Russian company looks pretty suspicious. And it means that Moscow is trying to disguise the simple and intuitive actions a kind of subtle game. For example, is “Gazprom” as a company of the Western type, and not a “thug with a gas gun.” In addition, Russia may seek to convince Western Europe that they are civilized people, but the real problem is the US with its sanctions policy and attempts to sell its gas at inflated prices.
In addition, the publication notes that Gazprom may appeal the decision of the arbitration, and then Poland will have to pay some amount.
On 15 June it became known that “Gazprom” will return the overpayment to the Polish PGNiG for gas. Poland initiated the proceedings with Russia on revision of gas prices in 2015. According to the agreement of 1996, Gazprom PGNiG supplies about 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year. Minimum annual contract quantity — 8.7 billion cubic meters. The agreement is until 2022.
In March 2020 the Stockholm arbitration sided with Warsaw and ordered from November 2014 to retroactively adjust the pricing formula for gas supplies to Poland. The Russian side appealed the final decision of the arbitral Tribunal in the district court, Svea. However, Poland indicated that the appeal still will not be able to change the verdict.
