Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro accepted the likelihood of holding a referendum on his resignation. He stated in his speech, which was broadcasted on Twitter.
Said Maduro, to start collecting signatures for a referendum will be from January 10, 2022. “People will decide whether I stay or leave,” he said.
At the end of April 2019 the opposition leader Juan Guido encouraged soldiers and people to overthrow Maduro. He said that the army took his side, and called the events “the final phase of “operation Freedom””. The next day, Maduro announced his victory over the forces of the opposition. Russia supported the incumbent President, the United States recognized the legitimacy of Guido.
