The President of Kazakhstan urged not to infringe on the Russian language

The President of Kazakhstan, Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev stated that strengthening the position of the Kazakh language in the country, should not infringe upon the status of the Russian language. On Thursday, June 25, according to “Sputnik Kazakhstan”.

Tokayev called on to make Kazakh language the prestigious and sought after in society. “Language is a great policy, so haste and condemnation can damage our statehood”, — said the President and added that the younger generation should be fluent in two languages.

Tokayev cited Ukraine as an example of an incorrect approach to the language issue. “A frontal attack with the aim of improving the status of state language and violent expansion of the range of its use is counterproductive, as it can cause the destabilization of interethnic relations”, — said the Kazakhstani leader.

Tokayev expressed the view that the teaching of the exact Sciences in universities can be left in Russian. However, in the appointment of officials to prefer candidates that are fluent in the Kazakh language.

Previously, Tokayev said that Kazakhstan’s transition from Cyrillic to Latin script due to a desire to expand the communication capabilities of the Kazakh language.
