Japan made a submission to Russia for exploration work in the area of the Kuril Islands. This was told by the Secretary-General of the Japanese government, Yoshihide Suga, reports RIA Novosti.
It is noted that the work carried out in the Okhotsk sea, including the Islands of Kunashir, Shikotan, Iturup and Habomai. RIA Novosti stressed that Moscow previously warned Tokyo about exploration, which was to go three months.
“We made a submission in connection with the fact that it does not coincide with our position on the four Northern Islands (…). A solution to the issue of Northern territories is very important, the government remains committed to continue negotiations with Russia on the basis of basic positions regarding the solution of the territorial problem and conclude a peace Treaty,” protested the Secretary-General.
Following the end of world war II between Moscow and Tokyo have not signed a peace Treaty. The main obstacle to his signing was the unresolved territorial dispute over the southern Kuril Islands — Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and the Habomai group. The Japanese side calls the Southern Kuril Islands the “Northern territories” and over them does not recognize Russian sovereignty. Moscow, in turn, recognizes the fact of the territorial dispute.
