Providence urban region in the Arctic region of Chukotka in 2020 will be cleared from 2 million tons of scrap metal. This was told by an employee of the Department of natural resources and environment district Oksana Dubovaya, reports TASS.
Cleaning will take place in the framework of the environmental programme “environmental Protection and ensuring rational use of nature in Chukotka”. It is planned that after the removal of the metal utilized.
The problem with the export of metal in Chukotka there are several decades. In the Soviet years there delivered fuel in barrels, which are still stockpiled in industrial areas. In addition, in the Chukotka region there are no enterprises for processing of secondary metal, and its export to neighboring far Eastern regions. Located in the tundra rusty barrels are harming fauna of the Peninsula — the sharp edges you can cut yourself reindeer.
Previously, University Professor, George Washington (USA) said that grocery stores, kiosks and garages, which in 90-e years were built in the Arctic Russian cities, has accelerated the destruction of permafrost. The Professor explained that due to this impact bearing capacity of soils is reduced, therefore increasing the risk of damage to facilities built on the ground, stalls and garages.
