Amendments to the Constitution will remove the question of ownership of the Kuril Islands, said the Governor of the Sakhalin region Valery Limarenko. It quoted the website of the regional government.
Limarenko reminded that voted on the amendments enshrined the territorial issue. According to him, the amendments to the Main law of the country vote, the residents of Sakhalin and the Kurils. “I am confident that we will support the majority of Russians”, — said the head of the region, speaking about the importance of the amendments.
He believes that in the event of their making territorial claims of other countries against Russia are meaningless. “And we can clearly and without regard for third-party opinions say our Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands are our, our country, our future”, — summed up Limarenko.
Following the end of world war II between Moscow and Tokyo have not signed a peace Treaty. The main obstacle to his signing was the unresolved territorial dispute over the southern Kuril Islands — Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and the Habomai group. The Japanese side calls the Southern Kuril Islands the “Northern territories” and over them does not recognize Russian sovereignty. Moscow, in turn, does not recognize the fact of the territorial dispute.
June 25 started a nationwide vote on amendments to the Constitution. Primary election day — July 1 — declared. Total voting across the country will be more than 96,5 thousand plots. As of June 28, more than 30 million Russians took part in the vote.
