Russia has the absolute right to conduct any work in the Kuril Islands, because this is her territory. So the claims of Japan said the head of the Sakhalin region Valery Limarenko; his statement is on the website of the Governor and government of the region.

Limarenko reminded that a few days ago, Japan was outraged by the works of Russian exploration in the area of the Kuril Islands. “Work on our territory, we have an absolute right. A right paid for with the lives of our ancestors who fought for the freedom and independence of the Motherland”, — he said.

The Governor added that every Russian now have the opportunity to contribute in order to finally close the territorial issue. For this it is necessary to vote on the amendments to the Constitution. “And after a few days, similar claims from abroad will be just meaningless. And we can clearly and without regard for third-party opinions say our Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands are our, our country, our future”, — summed up Limarenko.

Following the end of world war II between Moscow and Tokyo have not signed a peace Treaty. The main obstacle to his signing was the unresolved territorial dispute over the southern Kuril Islands — Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and the Habomai group. The Japanese side calls the Southern Kuril Islands the “Northern territories” and over them does not recognize Russian sovereignty. Moscow, in turn, recognizes the fact of the territorial dispute.
