Last week the President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid decided not to declare the Parliament adopted amendments to the law on diplomatic service, as they are not secured with the principle of equal treatment for married same-sex couples who register their relationship under the law “On cohabitation”. The decision provoked criticism from some politicians of the ruling coalition.
The Chairman of the party Isamaa Helir Valdor Seeder said that the President’s decision shows the need to register in the Constitution marriage as the Union of a man and a woman. “In light of this decision, it is obvious that it is necessary to take specific steps to protect the institution of marriage. It is a question of values, which stems from the long history and traditions of the institution of marriage. The introduction of the Constitution the definition of marriage would show that the state appreciates and supports the strong institution of family and marriage, and would make clear to the Estonian legislation,” — said Seeder.
At the insistence of the Estonian conservative people’s party in the coalition agreement of the formation of the government in 2019 was introduced a clause providing for the fall of 2021 referendum on the amendment to the Constitution on the protection of family and marriage simultaneously with municipal elections.
