Squadron “sea hunters” will patrol the Arctic

Squadrons of modernized helicopters Ka-29, which is called “the sea hunters”, will patrol the air space of the Russian Arctic, according to “Izvestia”.

These transport-fighting vehicles used by the pilots of the Pacific fleet at a base near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. In 2020, Ka-29 will begin to prepare for the Arctic in 2021, the helicopter pilots of the Northern fleet will sit behind their steering wheels. Helicopters have stationed near the town of Severomorsk on the Kola Peninsula.

The newspaper’s sources in the defense Ministry said that a decision in principle about using these helicopters has already been taken. They will be used to supply military bases, the transportation of military patrols of the Arctic territories may participate in anti-sabotage and rescue operations.

Previously the combat strength of the Northern fleet was increased by two squadrons of interceptors MiG-31, deployed at the airport Monchegorsk in the Murmansk region. Military pilots of the fleet to the far anti-aircraft and MiG-31 carry out regular air patrols of the Arctic zone. Ka-29 was made commercially available in the 1980-ies, but they are still not outdated.
