In Belarus for the first time the court overturned the death sentence. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
The sentence was previously imposed on 29-year-old Victor Scrungie, who was convicted for the murder of two pensioners and an attempt on the third. Crimes committed in January 2019. His accomplices sentenced to 18 and 22 years of a colony with a reinforced regime.
The conviction was overturned by the Supreme court Collegium. The case was remanded for retrial.
Belarus is the only country in Europe and the CIS, where not abolished the death penalty. In accordance with the criminal legislation of the Republic, the death sentence may be imposed for the most serious crimes, in particular, for the use of weapons of mass destruction, the outbreak of war, genocide, international terrorism, murder, seizure of power, terrorist attack, murder of a law enforcement officer, and treason. The penalty may be assigned only to men aged 18 to 65 years and is produced by firing squad.
