The President of Russia Vladimir Putin in conversation with the Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky criticized the Verkhovna Rada resolution on holding the local elections in 2020 as contrary to the Minsk agreements, the press service of the Kremlin.
Putin also noted that the decision jeopardizes the prospects for settling the situation in Donbas.
The conversation took place at the initiative of Zelensky. The two leaders positively assessed additional measures to cease-fire, which will come into force on 27 July. “Noted the need to improve the efficiency of the negotiation efforts of the Minsk Contact group”, — stated in the message on the official website of the President of Russia.
The Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution on July 15. The document States that local elections in Ukraine held on October 25. However, they will not be held on uncontrollable Kiev territories of Donetsk and Lugansk regions. The Ukrainian authorities repeatedly stated that the holding of elections is possible only after receipt of Kiev control over the border.
The representative of the Russian foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said that the resolution can be interpreted as the actual Ukraine’s withdrawal from the Minsk agreements.
