China announced the official closure of the U.S. Consulate General in Chengdu. This is stated in a statement from the Chinese foreign Ministry, which leads RIA Novosti.
In accordance with the requirements of the Chinese side of the diplomatic mission ceased operations on Monday, July 27, at 10:00 local time. The national USA flag was lowered from the flagpole at the Consulate General, and all employees left the building.
After that, the representatives of the competent authorities of China entered the territory of the institution through the main gate and took him in his charge.
The U.S. Consulate General in Chengdu was opened in 1985 and was responsible for the South-West of the country, including Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Tibet Autonomous region and city under Central authority Chongqing. Consulate is located in a strategically important place: it is the only American representation among the South-Western provinces.
On 24 July, China has decided to revoke the license for the establishment and conduct of activities of the U.S. Consulate General in Chengdu, and also put forward specific requirements to the General Consulate to stop all activities and events.
Beijing initially wanted to close the American mission in Wuhan, however, this step did not cause serious damage to US and so have evacuated the entire staff in January 2020, when the pandemic COVID-19.
22 July, the U.S. demanded that China within 72 hours to close the Consulate General in Houston. This decision is explained by the need to protect American intellectual property.
