Ivan Safronovich: Maxim Blinov / RIA Novosti
Adviser to the head of “Roskosmos” and the journalist Ivan Safronov, who was accused of treason, refused to deal with the investigation. This was reported by TASS and his lawyer Ivan Pavlov.
According to him, the investigator suggested Safronov to disclose sources of information, clarifies the “Kommersant”, as well as to plead guilty in exchange for lenient punishment — not more than two thirds of the maximum punishment — 10 years. The journalist refused.
Currently Safronov is one in a special cell of the SIZO “Lefortovo”, where he was transferred in connection with a suspected COVID-19. There he will stay until obtaining a test result for coronavirus.
The former head of the Council on human rights Mikhail Fedotov did not rule out that a suspected coronavirus Safronov could be “an excuse” for absolute isolation of the prisoner, reports “Kommersant”. The defender believes that the case of journalist is a compelling argument in favor of the revision of the 275th article of the Criminal code “treason”. After, as amended “criminal proceedings for treason is possible with equal success to attract the journalist and pensioner or a housewife,” said Fedotov. He recalled that eight years ago the wording of article 275 of the criminal code “retains the common law meaning.”
Safronov was detained on July 7 and arrested for two months. The FSB claim that he was recruited in 2012 by the Czech secret service, on the instructions of which he allegedly gave it to the representative in 2017 information constituting a state secret. Safronov pleaded not guilty.
