Russia’s plans on deployment of anti-aircraft missile systems (WRU) s-400 in the Arctic are designed to ensure safety and consistent military-political situation. This was stated in an interview with RIA Novosti Ambassador at large of the MFA of Russia Nikolay Korchunov, thus complying with the words of an American diplomat.
According to Korshunova, Russia work on the modernization of troops and strengthening the military presence in the region “is not redundant and is defensive in nature. It is proportionate to the current military-political situation, does not create threats to the national security of the Arctic States, does not violate any international legal agreements.”
The Ambassador stressed that the Russian government does not allocate in the Arctic military contingents of non-Arctic States and does not hold in the region of the exercises with their participation.
His words came after first Deputy assistant Secretary of state for European Affairs and Eurasian Affairs Michael Murphy has described Russian military presence in the region “beyond defense”. In addition to placing AAMS, we are talking about creating a new Arctic command and an Arctic units and updating of the Arctic transport infrastructure.
