Specialists of the Institute of Biophysics SB RAS came up with a way to recycle vegetable waste in space. This was reported by TASS in the Federal research center (FIC) “Krasnoyarsk scientific centre of SB RAS” (KSC SB RAS).
Russian scientists developed the technology involves the processing residues of wheat, which can be one of the main sources of power in life-support systems, able to ensure the survival of the crew on other planets or in long-term space flights. Experts have suggested that to fully oxidize the remaining straw to soluble mineral elements, and then use the resulting substances as fertilizers.
“Before adding the straw in her Pochvovedenie substrate was oxidized to digestible forms under the action of electric current in an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide. The researchers tested different degrees of decomposition of straw. Fully oxidized straw increased the yield in three times. This is due to the increased content of available nitrogen in the substrate, and mineral nutrients as potassium, phosphorus and sulfur,” explained the Institute.
It noted that in the future, scientists hope to improve this technology, in particular, reducing the amount of usage of hydrogen peroxide.
The increase in the number of domestic developments and patents for inventions is provided by the national project “Science”, which should be implemented in Russia to 2024. Only its implementation is planned to more than 625 billion rubles. He also suggests the creation of 15 scientific and educational centers of the world level, commissioning research facilities class “magicians” and the formation of an integrated system of training scientific and scientific-pedagogical personnel.
