The United States warned Germany about the threats posed by the pipeline project “Nord stream-2” in the field of security in Europe. About it reports Deutsche Welle with reference to the American Embassy in Berlin.
It is noted that Washington sees in the pipeline not a commercial project and a key tool of Moscow on strengthening of Europe’s dependence on supplies from Russia. According to the interlocutor of the company, opposing the construction of “Nord stream-2” state already expressed their position louder than before.
Earlier, the House of representatives approved defense budget in 2021, which contains expanded sanctions against Russian pipeline “Nord stream-2”. In particular, the project proposes to extend restrictive measures on companies and individuals who contribute significantly to the sale, lease, or provision of ships for laying of pipes for construction of gas pipelines, as well as their insurance.
The gas pipeline “Nord stream-2” from Russia to Germany under the Baltic sea was supposed to start in late 2019. The project launch date was postponed to the turn of the 2020-2021 years, first because of the position of Denmark, which did not coordinate the route of the project through their water and then because of the U.S. sanctions against companies involved in the project.
