Regrouping of troops in Europe, the US is increasing military presence near Russia’s borders and the strengthening of containment of Moscow. This was stated by the head of the Pentagon mark Esper, reports TASS.
According to him, the decision of President Donald trump on the partial redeployment of American troops from Germany to Italy and Belgium only accelerated already ongoing processes. Esper said that this step aims at the containment of Russia and strengthening NATO. The defense Minister noted that key U.S. allies in the North Atlantic Alliance welcomed the President’s decision on troop withdrawal.
The head of the Pentagon has reminded, that in Germany will remain fairly large contingent. He added that ultimately the United States a lot of troops being moved further East, closer to Russia, and Washington will continue its efforts to strengthen the forces on the Eastern flank of NATO.
Previously Esper reported that the Pentagon will withdraw from Germany, about 11.9 thousand military personnel stationed there, and will move the headquarters of the European command of the US forces in Belgium. According to the Minister, the redeployment of American forces will take place in the coming weeks. From roaming military about 5,6 thousand will go to other NATO countries, and 6.4 thousand will return to the U.S. and will be in Europe on a rotational basis. They will serve in the East and the Black sea to deter Russia.
In the Founding act Russia – NATO of 1997 included a direct ban on the deployment on an ongoing basis substantial armed forces and armaments of the Alliance on the territory of the Eastern European countries that joined the bloc since 1997.
